I stare at him in utter shock. I feel my eyes begin to water and before I can stop it there are tears streaming down my cheeks.
“N-Nero?” his hands fly to my face and then pull me into a tight hug. “I’m sorry, I-”
I press my lips against his in an attempt to silence him. When I pull back he’s even more surprised than I am.
“I love you too.” I say and smile.
He responds by hugging me closer and then cupping my face with his hands.
“Then why are you crying?”
He brushes away the tears with his fingers and leans in to kiss the corner of my eye.
“I just… that was my first kiss. And then when you said…” I look in his eyes and smile sadly, “I haven’t been told I was loved since my mom died.”
As I say this more tears fall and I bury my face in his shoulder. His hands rest on my back and he starts moving them up and down in an effort to comfort me.
“Nero, you are an amazing person.” He kisses the top of my head, “You are kind, and gentle, and you are the most loving person. And you deserve nothing but happiness.”
He holds me close for a long time, neither of us saying any more. Even though it is still early in the day, with Alex’s warm arms around me and his fingers stroking my hair, I grow sleepy.
After what seems like an hour I feel his fingers stop and look up at him. His eyes are now closed and his breathing is slow. I pull away from him and lean his sleeping body back against the pillows. I turn my attention to the movie, it having ended long ago. I find the remote and turn the movie off.
“Nero…”
I turn to where he lays and see he is only sleep-talking. I crawl back onto the bed and lay next to him. I pull his hands into mine and bring one to my lips, kissing his fingertips and then moving his hand to my heart. It twitches and I search his face, wondering if he’s woken up.
When there is no movement from him, I know he hasn’t. I lean in a little closer and kiss his lips, half expecting him to wake up this time. I close my eyes and concentrate on his breathing, listening to it and willing myself to fall asleep. But I can’t. My thoughts are buzzing, keeping me awake with images of these past few days. Images of Alex at GSA, his teasing words playing over and over again. I blush at each memory, knowing I’ll never get used to the way he makes the butterflies in my stomach go crazy.
As I think of these things I finally feel sleep getting closer and I force my body to relax. When I fall asleep I enter dreams of Alex, of living in a place with my family, and being safe.
For the first time since my mom’s death, I feel like everything’s finally working out.
“Nero, wake up.” A voice is calling my name and I can feel something shaking me.
I open my eyes slightly, but shut them immediately when I realize how bright it is.
“Ne-ro…”
My eyes fly open as Alex’s lips press against mine. I feel the heat rush to my face and he laughs.
“How long have I been asleep?” I sit up quickly, regretting it as my vision spots and everything goes dark for a few seconds.
“Careful, Nero, you’ve been sleeping for quite a while. I called your dad and told him you’d be sleeping over. I said you fell asleep on the couch.”
I give him a worried look, but he shrugs it off.
“He didn’t sound mad. He asked if you were ok.”
I look at him, confused. “He did?”
He nods and smiles, “Yeah, are you hungry?”
“A little. When you say sleep over, does that mean that it’s morning again?”
He laughs, “You slept all through last night. I woke up a few hours ago; I’ve been watching you sleep. You looked adorable, as usual.”
“Oh.” I look away at the door and he pulls me into a tight hug.
I pull back and smile sweetly before leaning in to kiss his cheek. He grins and takes my chin in his hand, an evil look in his eyes. He presses his lips into mine gently, and I feel him smiling. His lips travel from my mouth to my cheek and continue until they reach my ear.
“Nero.” He kisses below my ear and then blows into it, causing me to gasp. “Just tell me if I go too far.”
He pauses before kissing my neck. I hold my breath as he leaves a trail of kisses from my ear to the hollow of my neck. I whimper when his teeth scrape my neck and he grins.
“I love you, Nero.”
I open my mouth to respond, but I’m cut short when he bites my skin lightly. Suddenly he pulls back and looks at me, his eyes are bright and he smiles, then presses his hands to my chest and pushes me so I’m lying down. He moves so he’s straddling my waist and bends over so his lips are back at my neck.
He starts again with kissing the same spot as before, his hands moving to my cheeks. I shudder when his tongue flicks out to touch the skin and he laughs silently. He brings his lips back to mine and presses harder than before. I kiss him back at first, but hesitate when I feel his tongue slide across my lip. He notices my reluctance and pulls back.
“Too far?”
I surprise myself by shaking my head. He gives me a confused look and I open my mouth, trying to catch my breath.
“I just n-need to calm down.” I say.
He cups my chin with one hand and kisses my nose.
“Don’t worry; I won’t push you to do anything you’re not ready for.”
I smile nervously, I can see he’s a little disappointed, but I know he’s patient. I take a deep breath before raising my hand to the back of his head. I pull him closer and then kiss him softly. He does the same, and I feel him press into me even more.
When he licks my lip this time I still pause, but slowly open my mouth. He slips his tongue past my lips and touches it to my own. I let out a small gasp and he stops for a moment. When I don’t pull away he presses my tongue harder and I respond by pushing his back. As soon as I do that he smiles and starts sucking on my tongue. The sensation sends a jolt of shock through my body and I pull away instinctively.
“I’m sorry…” I look down and feel tears threatening to come.
He shakes his head, pulling me into a tight, warm hug.
“It’s fine, Nero, I said I wouldn’t do anything unless you’re comfortable.” He kisses my forehead lightly and pulls back.
“Thanks,” I smile, “I love you too by the way.”
He takes my hand and climbs off the bed, allowing me to sit up.
“Do you want to eat now?”
I nod and he pulls me onto my feet and then leads me down the hall. At honey and Sage’s room he stops and looks in. They’re sitting on the floor reading and when they look up and see us they jump to their feet. Honey attacks my leg and giggles while Sage reaches up at Alex. He picks the small boy up and laughs.
“How long have you guys been up?”
Honey ignores the question and starts jumping up and down.
“Are you making food?”
He nods and she smiles happily, “Will it be done soon?”
“Only if we get down to the kitchen soon!”
He sets Sage on the floor and tells them he’ll get them when it’s ready, and then drags me downstairs to the kitchen.
“What do you want?” he asks.
“Anything is fine.” I tell him.
He raises an eyebrow, but then smiles, “How about I make breakfast for Honey and Sage, and then you and I can go out.”
I sigh, but nod. I don’t want to spend his money, even though he seems all too willing.
“Do you want help?” I watch him as he pulls a pan and some eggs out.
He shakes his head and grins. I stay silent while he cooks, and when he’s done he shouts up the stairs for the twins. After they’ve been told what to do while we’re out, Alex grabs a coat and hands it to me.
“You didn’t bring one yesterday and it is colder today.” He takes out another one and slips it on, “You can keep that one.”
We walk out to his car and he opens the door for me before going to the driver’s side. He starts the car and begins driving.
“Do you think you’ll go to the dance?” Alex asks after a few minutes.
I think about it, and then turn to him smiling, “If you go, then I’ll go.”
This seems to make him happier than before and I smile to myself.
“Where are we going?”
He laughs and winks at me, “It’s a surprise.”
I roll my eyes and sit back, sighing. When we pull up to a building I look around for a sign, but can’t find one.
“Now will you tell me?” I ask, and he grins.
“We’re at Iridescent. It’s a little family owned sweets shop.”
We go into the little shop holding hands and I get nervous. I love Alex a lot, but I don’t want people to say something about either of us being gay. I relax when I see the shop is empty, aside from a pair of old ladies sitting with their husbands in the back.
A girl comes from the door that probably leads to the kitchen and approaches us.
“Table for two?” she smiles in a friendly way and Alex nods.
She leads us to a little table next to the window and I catch her eyes flickering to our hands. She hands us a menu before leaving quickly.
“What do you want?”
I stare at the menu in awe. It’s full of little pictures and descriptions, making it hard to choose.
“I… I don’t know.” I admit, and he laughs.
“I’ll order for you then?”
I nod and blush a little. I’m saved from further embarrassment as another girl comes up to our table.
“Are you both ready to order?” she looks at Alex first, and then at me.
“We’ll have today’s special, please.”
“And to drink?” she jots the order down on a pink pad of paper.
“Hot chocolate for both of us.” He smiles and she nods.
She turns to go back into the kitchen, but then she stops.
“I’m sorry, but,” her face goes pink, “Are you two dating?”
I freeze up immediately and Alex chuckles, but looks at me instead of answering. His hand squeezes mine under the table. He wants me to say it. I glance up at the girl, meeting her eyes nervously, and force myself to smile.
“Y-Yeah…”
Her eyes soften and she smiles once again then hurries to the kitchen. Moments later I hear squeals and turn a bright red.
“Nero?”
I look at Alex to see he’s smiling.
“Thanks, Nero.” He releases the hand that’s under the table then takes the one on top.
So much for being saved, I think, smiling.
“N-Nero?” his hands fly to my face and then pull me into a tight hug. “I’m sorry, I-”
I press my lips against his in an attempt to silence him. When I pull back he’s even more surprised than I am.
